1000 Books Before Kindergarten…
This free program encourages you to read 1000 books to your child before he/she enters school, a goal experts say helps children learn to read independently.
One of the best ways to encourage learning is to spend time sharing books each day. Reading to your child helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid foundation for school and learning success!
To achieve 1000 books before kindergarten, if you start at…
One year old reading four books per week adds up to 1,040 books by kindergarten.
At two years old, reading one book per day adds up to 1,095 books by kindergarten.
At three years old, reading two books per day adds up to 1,460 books by kindergarten.
At four years old, reading three books per day adds up to 1,095 books by kindergarten.
How to participate…
Children receive a reading folder and book bag upon registration at the library, with a page to record the first 100 books read to the child.
After You Register, Follow These Simple Steps:
1. Read to your child.
2. Fill out the reading log for the first 100 books you read together.
3. Return the completed log to the library for a small prize and the next reading log. Your child will add or move their star through our reading galaxy from planet to planet.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3.
5. When you’ve read 1000 books, your child will receive a book to keep. Their name will be added to the 1000 Books Photo Album. Remember to ask us to take a picture of your child and send it to the newspaper.
Books read at the library, school, and daycare count! Books can be read as many times as you like. The program is ongoing and ends only when your child starts five-year-old kindergarten.
When kids complete the mission to read 1000 books, we will take a picture of them in our Reading Rocket! They will have their picture posted in our photo album for our reading superstars!
